Medidas tipográficas: un recuento

Breve repaso al desarrollo de la concepción métrica en la tipografía en plomo, alternativa y complemento de la visión habitual en lo que conocemos como 'tipometría'. Se parte de una noción amplia de medida: el factor cuantitativo se dilata con la articulación de relaciones proporcionales e integra la dimensión cualitativa de los sistemas métricos tradicionales. La tipografía se considera bajo presupuestos similares: como sistema articulado de piezas materiales cuyas magnitudes contienen usos y valores específicos, más allá de su simple expresión numérica. Con tales premisas, se revisan fuentes documentales significativas del 'período de la imprenta manual'. Su examen, vinculado a los usos y costumbres de oficio, desvela la distinta aproximación métrica, que puede resumirse en tres fases evolutivas: hermética, intensiva, expansiva como recogen las referencias de los cuerpos tipográficos: adjetivas, sustantivas, numéricas. Se proporciona así un marco para apreciar el cambio de sentido en las medidas tipográficas hasta nuestros días

Back to the Future. The Future in the Past. Conference Proceedings Book

ICDHS is the acronym of the International Committee of De­sign History and Design Studies, an organisation that brings together scholars from Spain, Cuba, Turkey, Mexico, Finland, Japan, Belgium, the Netherlands, Brazil, Portugal, the US, Tai­wan, Canada and the UK. Since 1999, when the Design and Art History departments of the University of Barcelona organised the first edition of the ICDHS, a conference has been held every two years at a different venue around the world. These conferences have had two dis­tinct aims: first, to present original research in the fields of Design History and Design Studies and, second, to include contributions in these fields from non-hegemonic countries, offering a speaking platform to many scientific communities that are already active or are forming and developing. For that reason, the structure of the conferences combines many paral­lel strands, including poster presentations and keynote speak­ers who lecture on the conferences’ main themes. The 2018 event is rather special. The Taipei 2016 conference was the 10th edition and a commemoration of the ten celebrations to date. Returning to Barcelona in 2018 marks the end of one stage and the beginning of a new one for the Committee. The numbering chosen—“10+1”—also means that Barcelona 2018 is both an end and a beginning in the ICDHS’s own history. The book brings together 137 papers delivered at the ICDHS 10th+1 Conference held in Barcelona on 29–31 October 2018. The papers are preceded by texts of the four keynote lectures and a written tribute from the ICDHS Board to its founder and figurehead, Anna Calvera (1954–2018). The Conference, and the book, are dedicated to her memory

Tres catálogos generales de Fundición Tipográfica Neufville: preliminares

En este artículo se examinan tres catálogos generales publicados por Fundición Tipográfica Neufville (1885-1995). El examen desconsidera los fines habituales en estudios de historia de la tipografía y del diseño gráfico ¿la identificación y análisis de tipos, el interés compositivo¿ para proponer una mirada, algo marginal y modesta, que se centra en las páginas preliminares de los catálogos. Estos textos, a medio camino entre la raíz técnica y el propósito comercial, ofrecen datos valiosos para la revisión (y reconstrucción) histórica de la tipografía en clave disciplinar. Contienen referencias a aspectos hoy poco apreciados o relevantes ¿la adopción de sistemas (tipo)métricos, las pólizas, etc.¿ que, sin embargo, ilustran algunos estadios en la evolución, y declive, de aquella fundición en particular y del oficio tipográfico tradicional en conjunto

Abans d'iniciar pròpiament el tema de la ponència, voldríem fer un breu comentari sobre els motius que ens han animat a participar en aquest congrés. Es podria dir, succintament, que el principal propòsit ha estat oferir tant als participants en el Congrés com als futurs lectors dels textos que es puguin derivar d'aquest, un àmbit de reflexió i, si s'escau, de debat, presentat des d'una disciplina forana a la història moderna: el disseny.1 I és concretament el disseny gràfic el que donarà l'orientació als nostres continguts i un tractament específic al material de l'exposició, sempre amb la finalitat de recalcar que hi ha aspectes de la història que des de plantejaments multidisciplinaris poden esdevenir possibles i interessants camps de recerca interdisciplinaris. L'objecte últim és, doncs, obrir camins de col·laboració entre dues disciplines: la història, que ja gaudeix d'una llarga tradició quant a producció de coneixement, i el disseny, que tot just despunta com a disciplina universitària
